Zaporozhye nuclear chief warns OSCE of Chernobyl-scale risk

Yury Chernichuk told an OSCE video conference that a possible accident at the Zaporozhye plant, after repeated losses of outside power, could compare with Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Yury Chernichuk, director of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, warned that the consequences of a potential accident at the facility would be comparable to the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters. He said such an accident could be triggered by blackouts caused by Ukrainian attacks.

According to Chernichuk, the plant has lost external power 26 times since the conflict began and has had to switch to emergency diesel generators. He said this is the last barrier against accidents whose consequences could be compared with the disasters at the Chernobyl plant in the Soviet Union in 1986 and at the Fukushima plant in 2011.

He spoke during an international video conference hosted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The meeting, reported from Vienna on October 22, was dedicated to what the account called the Ukrainian army’s terrorist activities in the Zaporozhye Region.
