Russia’s Diana Shnaider, competing under a neutral status, reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 Ningbo Open in China by defeating unseeded Alexandra Eala of the Philippines 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday. The sixth-seeded match lasted 1 hour 55 minutes. Shnaider, 22 and ranked 13th, will next play fourth-seeded Iva Jovic of the United States.

The report links that neutral status to decisions taken in 2022. On 28 February 2022 the International Olympic Committee recommended that international sports federations exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine. Following those recommendations, most global sports federations barred athletes from both countries.

On 1 March 2022 the International Tennis Federation suspended the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations and scrapped previously scheduled tournaments in both countries. On 14 March 2022 the ITF also prohibited the Russian and Belarusian national teams from the 2022 Davis Cup and the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup.

Shnaider holds five WTA titles. Her best Grand Slam result was a semifinal at the 2026 French Open, and with Mirra Andreeva she won a silver medal in women’s doubles at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. The Ningbo Open is a WTA 500 hard-court tournament at the Yinzhou Tennis Center from 19 to 25 October, with $1.2 million in prize money. Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina is the reigning champion.
