Ghana’s president says he will use the Russia-Africa Summit to urge Vladimir Putin to agree a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has said he plans to attend the Russia-Africa Summit and appeal directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine. He framed the appeal as part of Ghana’s commitment to peace and dialogue in international affairs.

Mahama spoke at the Africa Summit in a session broadcast by Citi Live. He urged governments and investors not to hold back from Africa, stating: “It’s to your own disadvantage if you’re skittish about Africa.” He added: “Everybody is coming; the Chinese are here, the Indians are here.”

He said Ghana remains open to partnerships with the European Union, the United States and Russia, and is not aligning with any single bloc. The remarks come as China and India expand investment across Africa in infrastructure, trade, energy and technology. Observers said the mix of open economic ties and the planned ceasefire appeal shows Ghana seeking a credible, neutral role.
